Screen washers

Had this problem forever, it actually occurred to me yesterday that I ought to seek out the reason for the problem, here goes:

When I pull the stalk, the motor activates immediately but it can sometimes take a few seconds before screen wash emerges. Once it's flowing, it doesn't cease or splutter as long as I pull the stalk but if I release the stalk for a second and then pull it again, I'm back to waiting a few seconds before the wash emerges.

Any thoughts.

The delay is waiting for the water to fill the lines and then emerge. The water shouldn't recede back to the tank immediately, which is your problem I'd bet. It should take several minutes perhaps. So..
Air getting in at the pump end maybe?

No sorry! Ive Never taken apart or looked at the washer pump assembly. Could it be a defective pump that allows drain back, like a fuel pump check valve? Anyone?

I thought there was one too. Its a small 10p coin sized drum shaped thing with an outlet each end?

Perhaps one wasn't fitted then.

Maybe one isn't fitted and a good, strong pump prevents it from dropping back down to the tank. Perhaps mine is a little fatigued, hence the problem. I'll order the non-return valve and report back. Thanks to all.

Had the same problem, then my pump eventually packed up.
New pump (not expensive £10 approx) really easy to fit.
Not seen the fault since.

Worth a try for a tenner if nothing else obvious works!?

I had the same issue until I fitted a non return valve for an aquarium from my local pet shop. Now I get instant water.

Silly question time... where is the pump located? I haven't seen mine, but mine doesn't work. I haven't investigated at all yet though to be honest.

I do know where the washer tank is though!
