LPG Gas Tank connections

Post by Bison535 »

I have removed my EMPTY LPG underslung tank for a sand blast/repaint with 'powder coating' for long protection. Had to remove all the screw in brass fittings plus Gauge. To replace the screw fittings I plan to use ptfe tape! Has anyone else done this job? Is ptfe ok for the gas fittings? or is there another/approved 'sealant' to use when re assembling these screw fittings? Don't want a mobile Bomb :(

Snap doing mine too.
So my my tank is off ......

From this to this .....

I removed all brassware and gauges etc.. and cleaned it up a bit.
This involved flap wheel grinding disk to try to smooth it out but as you can see it was quite pitted and dented in places and I couldn't really go too mad or risk thinning out the outer wall of the tank.

Tank to the Powder coaters for blasting and powder coating - Collected last week.
Really happy with the finish and will be very robust under the van (still can see some of the deep pitting but I expected this)
(Sorry no pictures - left the tank at work)

I plan to put it all back together using gas ptfe tape and this

available from tool station.

& when all back together fill it with some gas and check all the connections for leaks with some gas leak check spray (tool station again)
Not sure what else you can do?
Other than have a spanner ready when filling to nip up any loose leaking connections?

Im sure someone else has already done this and can advise!!?

Good Luck :ok

Looking good :ok

You must clean up that brass now!!! ?

Will post some pics of mine when Im back to work next week (left it at work)
I went with red, looks good but the condition of my tank was quite bad beforehand so prob not as good as your finish.
Powder coating is the way to go thou!

I have no cover for the controls or the bracket underneath (that holds the cover on, attached with the bolts on the front)
Just wondering what your plans are there?

Not into brass polishing, had enough of that in the RN Ha ha ha :D

I have the original cover which is in two parts, the metal part which bolts onto the tank and then the plastic hinged/locking part which swings down to access the valves etc. My plastic part had been repaired and was brittle and cracked (beyond a second repair) So, I have a local Ventilation Company that play around with thin galvanised sheeting and they are currently knocking me up a replacement galvanised/lockable hinged cover which I will probably paint black (hammerite) Can post pic when i have unit back! :ok

Love the 'catering' yellow. Very professional. I recycled an autogas tank, adapted it and fitted it under rear seat to supply the Propex and cooker etc. I fill up at the pump now instead of getting ripped off with refills. Would have loved to have got it powder coated but time wasn't on my side. Will get it done next time the tank is empty. Well worth the trouble I'd say - looks great. :D

Mine wasn't expensive....
I got a few bits done... the lpg tank, brackets for the f45 awning and a few other bits in various colours.
Cost of sand blasting all rust/old paint etc.. and powder coating (incl. redoing the tank, cause they didn't do the plate area around where the gauges go) Just £50!!!!

I don't think thats bad? how long would it take to do the work yourself (and not as well) and at what cost? paint alone would prob be £20-30?

The finish is really very good, uniform and robust.

Recommended. :ok
In fact my metal bumpers are next (approx £30 for front and rears in satin black)
