Five speed gearbox linkage problem

Post by mrnickmuss »

I have recently done and engine change and I think that I may have shifted something.
As when I put it in reverse I then dont have any gears as the nylon ball which is attached to the gearbox jumps out of the linkage tube.
I then have to jump under the back, whack it with a hammer and its fine until the next time.
Any advice on how I can adjust or what I need to replace would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Make sure, if you undid two bolts that hold shift rear assembly to gearbox, that you reinstated it with the bracket the correct side of the gearbox rib. Easy mistake to make. Other than that, the ball may actually be worn. You can temporarily stop it parting company with loose cable ties. Mine was like that for some years until I replaced the ball assembly. Cheap enough on ebay though. Lots in WIKI on both 4 and 5-speed shift mechanism with lots of pictures.

Is the engine change a like for like swap, ie inline4 for inline4 or wbx for wbx or have you converted a wbx to inline4 ?
If the latter then you should also change the rear linkage and gearbox mount to suit, though of course there will loads on farcebook who will tell you you don't have to

After having to get out of my Doka twice today in the pouring rain and hit the linkage with a hammer I visited my local friendly garage I used their trolley jack to do a little gentle persuasion. It seems to have done the trick. I have ordered some new linkage parts and will get onto it when I have the time...
Thanks for the support!
