Alternator Bracket

Post by aerovolito »

I bought a new alternator for my Westy which has a AAZ engine fitted. The old alternator was never correctly aligned with the pulleys but it worked so I never investigated why. Now I come to fit the new one and alignment is further out. Both alternators are the same but my old one looks like it had the front part of the casting for the pivot ground away, allowing it to sit slightly further forward. Can anyone tell me what's wrong?

Hmmmm unclear...however, what I can tell you and often missed, is the 'bushing' (the bit sticking out of the rear bracket) moves and will tap backwards....whether this will result in enough room for the alternator?

FWIW, in case you weren't aware and its causing any confusion when speccing parts, the v-belt accessory setup in the pic is not from an AAZ. The AAZ used a ribbed belt, different pulleys, alternator, alternator bracket. You have a 'bitsa' setup, of which some bits have been modded by the sound of it. There are several alt pulleys too, with different dimensions, depending on the original fitment. Personally when I fitted a 1.9 to replace a 1.6, I simply used the 1.9 setup and it works fine, no messing about.

I would change that rusty hose clip also whilst you can get at it if I were you. Doesn't look like it will cling on for much longer. :D

..or just bin it and fit a 1.9 hose instead of chopped 1.6 hose.

I figured it was a 'bitsa' setup. Problem is I can't figure out what bits I got! The alt bracket is from the JX right? The Alt in the photo came from Brickwerks and is the 90amp diesel version. My local auto electrics shop is investigating a longer pulley for me. Meanwhile, I've also noticed that the power steering pulley doesn't line up correctly on the crank...but the waterpump does!!

More confusion....

Well spotted. It's on my current list...along with, rusty trailing arms & knackered bushes. Worn trailing arm mount. Rusty spring pads. Knackered wheel bearings. Knackered CV joints. Engine oil leak. Plumbing in the diff lock (2wd). Rusted tailgate window aperture. And on and on and on. All to be done in a couple of weeks so I can head south for my yearly migration. It was only supposed to be new shocks and CV boot. Typical, I know. :rofl

Shame we're not closer as I've several crates of 1.6 & 1.9 engine parts including numerous pulleys brackets etc. Yes, that bracket looks like the normal 1.6 one. Re. the pulley, there is a bit of adjustment in/out, by using a thick washer. I do have a spare shiny new pulley here, but I'm not sure if its 65A or 90A. It's ~32mm overall length and 65mm dia.

Thanks Andy but I found one with a double groove and it fits perfect. I still have to work out why the power steering pulley doesn't line up. I want to blame the crank pulley but the water pump lines up ok!!??

If my memory serves me well I turned a pulley around and welded it when I did my 1Y, was dished in to the alternator is now out. There is always something that needs to be fettled when doing a change.
