1998 SA Microbus 2.6 L failed MoT Emissions

Post by wardhugh »

Hi All
The engine code is ADV. Does anyone know if this has a Cat. Converter, my local garage can't spot one but MoT examiner thinks it could have. Garage will investigate further on Monday if need be. MoT thinks the CO should be 0.3 or 0.5 depending on test, actual readings are 1.175 and 3.871 respectively, well outside what he is testing for.
I have just had a read of "In Service exhaust emissions for road vehicles" and it appears it is being tested as a car (which it isn't) and there is no mention of the engine type (ADV) in the annexe for either car or light goods. I don't think it is covered in table one - Petrol Fuelled Cars, but in table 2 - Other Petrol Fuelled Vehicles not included in the annex it shows a CO limit of 3.5% vol.
If anyone knows any more on the subject I will be pleased to hear it, and I will be going to chat (very politely) to the MoT examiner on Monday.
Regards
Ward

It won't have a cat, but according to MOT manual it should be tested as cat equipped because it was first used after Aug 1st 1995.
However manual also states that engine shouldn't be expected to give better figures than original design would meet and specifically mentions African vehicles as possibly needing a letter from manufacturer stating it cannot meet cat requirements.
It should be tested as a car.
Good luck!

If gross vehicle weight is over 2.5 tonnes then it is not a car for MOT emission purposes and non-cat figures apply. Handbook for 2.5i says gross vehicle weight is 2.565 tonnes then you may be OK!

Gunther in Germany had similar problems getting a German registration and TUV. If you need further assistance re emissions confirmation then he may be able to help. Here is a relevant post from the Brick-Yard.

Phoned DVSA this morning and they confirmed that it should have a non-cat test as per MOT Testers manual section 7.3 page 10 ( thanks again Marlinowner). One of the spark plugs was pretty ropey which wouldn't have helped, air filter could do with being replaced but I haven't been able to find one yet (VW 22S 129 620b or 620c) if anyone can help??

Glad you're on the way with the emissions test!
Having a 2.5i I don't have info on the 2.6i air filter except to know it's different - have a browse through the brickyard forum - http://www.brick-yard.co.uk/forum/south ... rum44.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
