Vacuum Hose - Replacement

Thought I'd post this up as it may help someone with the symptoms I had. I took the van on a long motorway run to pick some bits and pieces up and on the way back it started playing up in that there was no mid throttle, which pointed towards the vacuum advance.

Now I have replaced mine with a Powerspark one and was using a blue 3mm silicone hose, which I think started to deteriorate and collapse under vacuum after the constant motorway run. This was further proved after I changed the hose with new (same spare hose) and the symptoms stopped immediately.

So, to stop this possibly happening again, I've now bought some 4mm hose from Powerspark which is constructed using a high quality silicone Polyester or Nomex compound. It is also further reinforced with a polyester layer to provide a more rigid structure to prevent collapse under high Vacuum conditions whilst sustaining pressure.

I would have thought that silicone was too soft for vacuum hose unless reinforced for that purpose. I would have thought that Zytel type would be better. (nylon)

Mine is Plastic pipe, 4mm od, 2 mm id with moulded RTL or small sections of straight pipe joiners, original I think.

I was wondering whether the Powerspark vacuum advance and Weber carb may give a slightly different advance suction/curve but could be totally wrong (the original bosch vacuum advance seem to work fine with the 3mm hose).

Just to confirm this hose has a 4mm internal diameter hole and 10mm outer diameter with a 3mm wall thickness

This stuff should be all tickety-boo but will report back any findings

To be honest the Powerspark unit has been fine & I thought I'd give it a go as was only £17. It has a slightly larger 'hose end' than the Bosch one so I think the pspark hose is better for it. The hose also fits the Weber better to so I wonder whether the hose end on the carb is also different to that of a Pierburg?

My local motor factors does a variety of vacuum hose. Can't see why anyone would bother mail order, unless its freepost. The only hose I've bought via the web is silicone water hose. I like to physically see what I'm buying for other stuff. VW Commercial are often good for bits like that too. I've lost count of the number of parts I've seen priced at double what VW supply them for.
