Replacing the jx

Post by vwaddict »

I'm 98% sure the engine is cooked in our latest bus (as the guy we brought it off suggested) so I'm thinking of changing it for something with a bit more poke.
So I'm undecided between a 1.9 td or the 2.0 gti.

So really id like to hear what you guys think on performance & more importantly, which is the easiest to fit?

Easiest to fit will be the 1.9 td, the 1y engine is basically an aaz engine without a turbo and will happily run with your jx turbo and fuel system.
The aaz engines are getting a bit thin on the ground and finding a good one can be difficult but the 1y engines are cheap and there are plenty of them.
The 2.0 petrol agg and ady iirc, are a good engine but will require quite a bit more work as the wiring loom will need modifications and you will need to fit a high pressure fuel pump and swirl pot, not difficult just depends how much work you want to do.
Both engines will bolt in using you existing parts, however the petrol engines will need an exhaust fabricating.

So will the exhaust & turbo just swap straight over or is there any fabrication needed? Which shouldn't be a problem just interested to know.....

Did your 1y engine have power steering? If so how did you get around that?

Yes the 1y had power steering but if your van hasn't got it just remove the pump from the engine like I did if you wanted I think you could leave it on and just remove the v belt if you was thinking of adding the power steering to your van at a later date that's up to you.

I'm not sure you can put a turbo on all 1Y engines to make sure I would always check to make sure it has D/TD on the engine block under the exhaust manifold as I said I'm not sure if I'm wrong I am sure someone will correct me

I had a 1.6 diesel block that had the oil squirters but it only had 1.6D cast on the side, so it is no guarantee. Only sure way is to have the sump off and check.

Hi vwaddict
before I did my convertion I did try to save my 1.6td jx engine because they are supposed to be a good engine the only reason I did it was the head was cracked and it couldn't be repaired so if I was you I would take the head off and get it pressure tested first before doing anything.

I've not driven a 1.6td t25 yet properly but I've heard they feel under powered, my last one was a heavy 2.0l cu air-cooled camper, it was a struggle to drive, my mates bay window with a 1641 used to leave me standing......
I would like to just keep up with the traffic tbh ;)
