Automatic Gearbox question
Got a leak, dripping from atf sump. I fitted a new filter and gasket to no avail Looking from the ns rear wheel the leak seems to come from a circular shape above the pan seal . I've since cleaned the area up and that's definitely the source of the leak. What is that part and is there a seal there?

Re: Leak from side of Auto box - is it a failed seal? Pict inc'd
IN there is the 2nd gear brake band piston, but I am no expert!!! The cover appears to be sealed with two o rings . I have a bad pdf copy of the transmission manual if you let me have your email.

That's it!. As far as I can see, the o ring can be replaced with the gearbox in place. I'm a bit nervous about touching the auto box. Has anyone done this repair?
Cheers,I'll PM

Re: Leak from 2nd gear piston cover - Auto box
A local automatic gearbox specialist has said the box has to come out? There are small leaks on the torque converter as well. I'm thinking it may be worth getting the box rebuilt as the ATF was very dark. Can anyone recommend someone who knows our vans?

Re: Auto box specialist - any recommendations?
Aidan Talbot is your man but he does normally have a fairly long waiting list. He would at least be able to provide you with sound advice that you could trust.

I don't think Aidan does auto boxes.

Re: Auto box specialist - any recommendations?
I thought he dealt with all T25 boxes but looking at his new website he doesn't mention them. He should be able to provide sound advice though or at least point you in the right direction.

Re: Gearbox out? 2nd gear piston cover leak autobox
Been to a local auto specialist. He said gearbox has to come out for a repair so I might as well get i rebuilt. When I asked him what would be done the answer was ""everything" and then silence. Not sure about him. Seeing a T25 guy on Monday
Looking about it seems that this can be done in situ. Has anyone done this repair before and can say one way or the other?

Re: Gearbox out? 2nd gear piston cover autobox
Still getting loads of different advice. Most have said the box needs to be dropped but the US forums and the last gearbox specialist I spoke to knew the 010 box but hadn't dealt with one for a few years and said its a twenty minute job.
1. pop the circlip
2. Tap the cover which should come loose as there's no corrosion
3. Fit o ring
4. Get a mate to help to lever cover into place whilst circlip is replaced.
In two minds, really don't want to balls it up and end up immobile but does seem straightforward. Decisions decisions

It's easy for me to say - not having to face it - but from an outsider perspective, I would try and do it in situ if US sites show you how.
Worst case is you get stuck, then you have to remove it anyway, so you may as well try the easier route first...

Re: Gearbox out? 2nd gear piston cover autobox
Found a thread on Samba where someone attempted to DIY it. He found it impossible to put the cover back on and it looked like the valve body and pan had to be dropped for the piston to be pushed back in then refitting the cover and adjusting the valve after. I don't think my knowledge it up to this. I wonder if the cover is removed slowly whether everything would saying place.
If anyone else needs to do this job here's the links below.

Back to looking for a mechanic to do it, still don't think it needs a complete rebuild but looking like that might be the only option

Re: 2nd gear brake band piston cover autobox
Just a final update. I had too much ATF in it. I had checked the level warm but on reading through the auto gearbox manual a member kindly emailed me it says to check the level after about six miles running with the engine still running. There are also two breathers on the gearbox and one of mine was stuck. The leak has dropped significantly and is very slight now. So much for needing a new gearbox then!

So it was operator error then?
