Bubbling in top up tank

I've just picked up a 89 JX diesel, the old boy I brought it from said he thought the head gasket had gone, now I've heard that bubbling in the tank is a give away, is this true?

I took a look in the expansion tank as the coolant level light was flashing & it was almost empty when cold.....

The oil seems OK, it doesn't smoke real bad & it ticks over good.....
How else can I check?

Never done it myself but I'm told any garage with an MOT exhaust gas analyser can stick the probe in the top up tank and sniff for combustion gasses.
