Our 2.0CU engined camper is showing signs of flooding. It will sporadically cut out and refuse to start unless left for 2-5mins, when it will suddenly start right back up and run as if no problem. The tailpipe is also looking suspiciously black despite regular 20min runs at 50/60mph along the motorway.
Spec is: twin solex carbs looking generally very clean/ possibly rebuilt.
new fuel lines from tank right through.
Facet Posi Flow Efp-3 electric pump, original filthy looking pump still in place with crimped/ sealed entries and exits.
Can't see any regulator so assume it's the 1.5-4.0psi pump. It's wired to give a prime function from a switch on the dash, so doesn't come on fully until the engine starts, seems like a proper job. I've changed the fuel filter between the tank and pump.
The only thing that I can see that looks odd is that the return into the tank is sealed up. Again it's done very neatly, but there is definitely a return spur at the tank and as far as I can make out there should be a return coming from the passenger side carb - but I can't see where from.
I guess my question is whether this sounds like a reasonable electric pumped set up, or should I just be looking at going back to a mechanical pump/ completely standard setup?
Having searched I realise that the float valves are probably worth replacing, but I can only see rebuild kits from the states that include the float - where do I get them in the UK?

Re: 2.0 Aircooled Flooding?
There is no fuel return on the CU engine the left tank spur should be blanked off.
Although the EFP3 is the correct low pressure pump, don't assume the pressure is correct, check it, they normally run at near 2.5 psi.

If it is flooding the problem is most likely the float valves leaking.
Easy to check if they are, just remove the air filter from the top of the carbs immediately after the engine is stopped you will see fuel dripping down the venturi. The correct 2mm float valves are hard to source in the UK but can be sourced from Germany at a price otherwise the standard Solex 1.5mm valves can be fitted if you drive moderately.

But bear in mind other things like the ignition system can cause similar symptoms.

That'd explain it being such a neat job then!
Ignition system all looks pretty new. I changed the distributor cap because I had one and put on a new coil because it was the only bit of the ignition system that looked original - and I once had a Cortina that had similar symptoms that turned out to be an overheating coil.
I'm not at all familiar with these engines, so trying to check that any mods the van has picked up in its 34 years are done properly.
I'll get the air filter off today and have a look for leaking float valves. Do these carbs have an actual float/ float bowl? That's what appeared to be missing from the rebuild kits I talked about in my last post.
Thanks very much for the reply Herb!
