After your sound advice on the battery I have just ordered it thanks Martin.

I do have circuit testers and a digital read out tester thing but it only lights up with 11 12 and 13 volts and up until now that has been just fine :)

I kept forgetting to turn it off which meant every time I needed it, it wouldn't work. Have just bought a backlit meter with auto shut of.

The other thing I've found really useful is a benchtop (lab) power supply. I had drawers full of old power adapters before I bought that and its really handy for testing low-draw 12v stuff for camper projects and other stuff.

I use an old 12v battery from our house alarm for bench testing things, 2ah or something. Theyre about £12 from screwfix or similar, and can be recharged with your car battery charger. Quite handy I've found.

Alternator to positive read .5 so that could be a problem?
