Bargain?

I don't really agree with the expression "trying it on", as that has slightly dishonest connotations to my mind. We didn't attempt anything dishonest!

An offer was publicly advertised for a contract, the terms of which seemed favourable and which we chose to accept. The seller then refused to fulfil the contract.
I would have been fine with that if they had been honest and truthful in their explanation - that was my point. Everyone makes mistakes, but to blatantly lie to me to cover their harrises, that really grinds my gears! A simple "We are very sorry but the item was incorrectly listed on Amazon, and we are not prepared to sell at the advertised price. They usual price is ££££, would you still like to purchase?" would have been the thing to do in my book.

I got a free HTC smartphone from Vodafone once, due to an incorrect internet listing. Nobody told me that was wrong. Is it a matter of the size of the error (if it is an error - after all, my product was apparently lost in the post on this occasion) weighed against the size of the company concerned? If so, who makes the rules, and where can I get a copy?

In the end it'll be down to conscience. Personally I wouldn't have purchased, but accept that some will seek to take advantage of something that has clearly been mispiriced. Copper isn't cheap these days.

Sadly not everyone would be so amicable with the honest explanation, in truth the letter of the law would probably have been on the buyers side and some purchasers might have threatened to take this down the legal road, there are lots about. For instance what if you had purchased not just a couple of 100m but several, I too would have been tempted to tell a little story, I also as a buyer would have expected to hear a little lie as if I was told the truth I would have thought this was as big a mistake as the incorrect listing. After all I am sure that the seller doesn`t think anyone is daft enough to believe him, the lost in post nonsense is just political drivel. I think the right thing to do would have been to contact the seller first to check on the price in turn to avoid the mess.

OK, Mr Grumpy.

Maybe the different perspectives depend on from where you are looking. I am in business, and I buy the best I can as cheaply as possible to sell at a reasonable profit. If an exceptional example of this presents itself then I may seek to take advantage of the opportunity (but only business to business). That is trade. Profit is not something to be ashamed of. However, lying is. It is not acceptable, and most certainly not to be expected! I don't tell lies to my customers, or anyone else, and I do not accept being lied to. Does anyone really think that's ok, or is it just me?
