Cambelt Snapped advice needed (£800 ..??)

Post by pgra0909 »

Hi Guys... totally gutted here.. My belt snapped and apparently damaged the valves? I ended up calling a mobile mechanic who called round and fitted a new belt to see if it damaged the head or not... anyway it wouldn't start to he took the camper to his garage. he then said the valves were bent and a long with some other bits which needed replaced... Stem seals i think? not sure.. any way to repair the head it's £380. plus he says his labour for removal and refit. £40 recovery and oil/new gaskets.. in total he says £800 (Cash) really need someone to tell me this is about the correct price... Just can't afford this at the mo and it's so near Christmas.

Any advice / guidance welcome ...Thanks

Pretty dam fair, a new head is best part of £2k plus the belt kit oil filter labour head bolts etc...so a warranted job for £800 is fair

Would certainly question the bill for doing the belt the first time and get matey to qualify it. Futile exercise at your expense.

I'd get that confirmed as an estimate or a fixed price, ideally do it by email or text so you have it in writing, all too often a price gets doubled or more and they say 'that was an estimate' then where are you? he has your van, you pay or loose it.

Or if he won't write it, you put it in writing if the bill goes over 800 he must stop and get permission for the extra work.

Heads should be on eBay a bit cheaper than that but yes, with all the work probably fair if final bill is £800.
Might check history of belt. They have a life in years as well as miles. Forget AAZ belt miles but think 60 to 90k. Age probably 10 years.
