Oil light on dash

Hi all can someone just confirm what is supposed to happen with the oil light on startup because when I start my van up the oil light flashs all the time till I start it then it goes out is this right or should it stop flashing before I start it I have waited for a few minutes but it just keeps flashing till I start it

flashes as a self test then goes solid untill pressure build up.. mine takes a second or two to go out.
1981 Vanagon Westy Burning oil as fuel...

Cheers so what your saying is it flashes a few times then goes solid to say your oil pressure is ok then you start your van so because mind keeps flashing and only stop when I start it is tell me there is something wrong with my oil pressure

On vans with two oil pressure switches and the "buzzer of doom" oil pressure warning circuit then the light flashes until the engine starts and oil pressure rises. If it starts flashing when the engine is running then you have a problem, but your's is working as expected.

Cheers for confirming that as I have just put another engine in and was getting worried.As i haven't had the van long and And I am still doing it up .
