Hi all, just joined after being a guest user for a fair whilst. I've got a 1.9DG 4 speed van with plans to put in an EJ25 from a 1998 legacy . I've got £1200 to spend and plan to fabricate as much as I can as I have access to welders/lathes/bending machines etc. I'm reasonably mechanically able as I do all mine own maintenace and have done a few gearboxes and clutches and also have my own four post ramps. Just have a few queries about the conversion and I also wanted to create a thread to post my progress with the build in just incase anyone wanted to follow it.
If I fabricate an adapter plater where can I find a suitable flywheel as I've heard I need a "special flywheel" to fit. I'm aware of the bellhousing kit availabe from RJES but I'm going to be making the adapter plate as my project piece for my engineering qual.
Thanks in advance

Just use the subaru flywheel if its a manual donor vehicle.

Brilliant to hear I've heard all sorts of stuff about some sort of "special flywheel" so glad to know I can just use the subie flywheel. Thanks for the responsemultisi wrote:Just use the subaru flywheel if its a manual donor vehicle.

if you use your existing bellhousing and an adapter plate and you don't reduce the height of the bellhousing then I think you'd have to be clever with the clutch fork release bearing adapter to make it able to operate the Subaru clutch as it will be further away than original clutch; RJES bellhousing is shorter than the petrol bellhousing alone (let alone with another 12mm adapter plate on) and needs an adapter to lengthen the throw of the VW clutch arm to operate the Subaru release bearing, the RJES release bearing adapter is pretty simple but effective and the RJES guide tube correct length
If you want a flywheel for a petrol bellhousing adapter plate set up look at Kennedy Enterprises stuff from the states
I'm not saying it can't be done, MultiSi may have done it hence his reply, he's got enough scoobbied vans, but I don't know how you'd use the original flywheel with VW clutch fork

From someone that has just completed a Subaru turbo conversion my best advice is buy what you need to buy to make things easy , I brought most of my bits , I brought a bell housing and output shaft as this allows me to use a full Subaru clutch as there much stronger(second hand RJES) got my wiring loom done properly and brought a engine cradle , this made fitting very easy and even with me having to buy most stuff I still managed to do the conversion for just over £2000 including the engine , this would of been less but mine was a early air cooled so I needed some stuff that a lot of vans already have if there water cooled already
The most helpful part of the whole conversion has been this site and the people in it as iv found some very helpful people on here

Sorry i may have confused you, i was forgetting about the adapter plate set up, i dont know anything about suitable flywheels for that. I just use subaru flywheel with RJES bellhousing ,vw clutch fork with extra welding for strength,no special engineering, vw / subaru clutch for small engines and full subaru turbo clutch set up with RJES input shaft for the big one. Good luck with the project.

So it seems the only way is to either get a RJES bell housing or a special flywheel from Kennedy engineering. The first option I'm not fond of as it makes my adapter plate fabrication plans redundant and the second I can only imagine will cost an arm and a leg to ship over.
Can anyone shed some light on how different a RJES bellhousing is compared to the standard one and what's so special about the speculation flywheel from Kennedy. I'm pretty much set on fabricating the majority of it all as I have the facilities and a group of helpful people so I might aswell utilise them.

Re: New Member with Scooby Plans
I've explained the difference, the rjes bellhousing takes the VW clutch fork and fits it into a bellhousing that mates directly to the Scooby engine with Scooby flywheel and clutch and is overall shorter than the vw petrol one so usefully moves the engine forward a few mm
if you interpose an adapter plate between the petrol bellhousing then you have to make a special flywheel that will mate to the Scooby crank and give you back the extra distance you have added plus the difference between the flywheel faces of the vw and Scooby engines relative to the gearbox main case, basically it needs to be thick and may use another clutch or hybrid set up or either of the two alternatives vw wbx or Subaru and needs to put a ring gear in the right place for the starter motor and be rotationally balanced for the rev range of the engine and have a mass not dissimilar to the original one
simples as the meerkat says but what do meerkats know about engineering ?
