LED Flasher unit?

Post by CovKid »

Anyone know of a direct replacement relay for the 4-pin hazard/flasher unit that is tolerant of LED bulbs? Or is it a case of modding?

Seems mad to introduce resistors - not very efficient.

I think there are some available in the motorbike world.

Otherwise it's just a case of adding some ballast.

Flat panels Dave. Tried LED bulbs and I really don't like them. Panels have a more even light and fit perfectly in ULO rear lights. I've been running them for almost a year but held off on amber ones due to relay issue. The fog aperature (not pictured) uses two panels.

Don't get too excited though. They will not fit Hella units, so if you've got those, forget it. ULO and Hella backing plates are vastly different. There are also two brightnesses, 5050 and 5630 - you need to do your homework on that side.

I don't want to go off topic on this though. Focus is on relay

I thought about fitting indicator repeater units just forward of the back bumper.
Or using a 555 timer ic ( it might hurt my brain though!)

What I don't understand with respect to flasher unit is all parts outlets sell a 3-pin hazard/indicator relay for our vehicles yet mine is a Hella 4-pin (4DM003360). The extra pin I've got is C2. I think the 3-pin ones just have 49, 49a and 31, unless C2 is actually redundant and merely being used as a locator. Will have a nose at socket tomorrow to see if there are actually four wires connected to it.

I suspect 4-pin relays are to handle towing electrics (which I've got) and those without have the 3-pin but unable to confirm that. The only possible saving grace is that the 4-pin I've got is labelled 'electronic' so perhaps with this, the flash rate will be unaffected anyway.

What is the problem with using a 4 pin led flasher unit like these? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/4-Pin-Car-Mot ... SwgZ1XtXp0

How do you stand legally as I believe if a bulb failed the driver has to be informed. With the old system the flasher got faster telling the driver but with some of these systems I believe there is no feedback.

When did that become a legal requirement? I have never heard of that.

Have a look at 'LED AUTOLAMPS' website. they do a 3 or 4 pin relay specifically for led lamps.
might be what you're looking for. :ok
