32 34 PDSIT carbs help please

Post by mgbman »

I am looking to help my son sort out his T25 1980 CU Devon which he has owned for 6 years now.

On his way to the Grill n Chill from Hastings he stopped to top up the fuel and made a mistake and put diesel in the tank. The AA came out to the petrol station and drained the tank.

My son filled up with petrol and went on his way, all fine. On the Sunday afternoon returning back to Hastings the van lost power going up hill and stopped. He got the AA to recover it to his local garage in Bexhill to help him sort it and do the MOT.

The garage sorted a couple of small issues and passed the van, but they could not see what the fuelling problem was as the engine started and ran ok and passed the emissions test.

We both went to the Brighton Breeze yesterday and I took my T2. The T25 was running fine, but on the way back to Hastings it broke down again with the same symptoms, lost power suddenly going up hill and another AA rescue.

We have done a lot of work on the van over the 6 years but never touched the carbs. We fitted a Facet pump 2 years ago and it seems to work fine and ticks nicely.

The engine has an electronic ignition fitted to the old vac can distributor and the vac can has two ports but only one is connected, the other is open to the air.

We have fitted another fuel filter recently as the old one was grubby. It has the original fuel tank.

The van starts and idles fine but has this intermittent loss of power up hills presumably when the fuel demand is high and can't be met.

I would appreciate any help and ideas as to how best to approach this ;problem.

Hello,

Do you have a spare distributor and coil to 'swap in'

Here is my CT.. with total heresy..

Points and condenser ignition...

and the coil on the side..

If you have not fiddled with the carbs.. and the thing runs and ticks over ok..

Check for air leaks..

If you want to play carbs.. this may help..

Its a facet 1.4 to 4 psi pump with no adjustment of the pressure. The pump runs and delivers fuel but it is 2 years old now. I do have a spare new one.

the carbs have not been touched or adjusted during the 6 years of ownership.

the van starts and runs fine but stops after about 30 minutes of running. maybe its fuel or maybe an ignition fail of some kind.

It reads like your pump can't keep up or the coil is getting hot

The sudden stopping only started happening after the diesel in the tank mistake.

Replacing the old tank along with new non leaking breathers and seals is on our to do list. I am thinking its an opportunity to replace the lot.

Which tank to get from Brickwerks is a question, the van has plastic filler pipe so assume its a later tank (van is 1980). They are available.

The gear rod bush above the tank has gone, I can just see its missing, so the rod grinds on the body. Fuel is leaking from an old grommet on top of tank so smell of fuel.

I have a lot of spares ( I have a 1975 Bay myself) including a new Pertronix coil. I could get a new Pertronix electronic module for the T25 distributor, which would probably help.
