Any Aircooled experts know their cams?

Post by itchyfeet »

WBX DG cams are now pretty much gone it seems, they were also fitted to CT1.6

I found this which is a four rivet cam for a T2 bay 1.6 from 8/71
https://www.vwheritage.com/shop/1131090 ... 71-4-rivet" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Anybody know what the cam data is, timing and lift?
Also were these fitted with hydraulic or solid, I heard the cam was different for both but not sure why or what?

DG is 5/34/38/4 or 1/30/36/8 according to the link below, don't know lift going to measure one.

1600 Bays had solid followers so don't have the pre lift ramps.

Bay timing was
Inlet
Opens 7 deg 30 min BTDC.
Closes 37 deg ABDC
Exhaust
Opens 44 deg 30 min BBDC.
Closes 4 deg ATDC

Thanks bigherb thats not a million miles off and so may suit DGs

I checked Vagcat and you are right solid lifters so I guess not a straight swap.

I wonder what engine rebuilders are doing about lack of cams?
Probably refitting the old ones

what happened to the 'Silverbullet' cams, wasn't there a separate thread re development or are they only suitable for larger capacity engines?

You can get cams made SB cams were 18/58/58/18 timing, 9.2mm inlet & 8.5 exhaust valve lift so not suitable for DG also 3 bolt, yes you can buy adapters but all adding to cost and complexity.

DG cam is 7.3mm lift inlet and 7mm exhaust, I measured a new VW one with a dial guage and mounted in a lathe on dead centres so pretty accurate ( assuming I was sold a DG cam of course :rofl )

From some of the units that I've had come through you'd not be wrong with that assumption...

Vw heritage do (or did) have a limited stock of nos dg cams

I've not had a chance to speak to my guy in the states and see if he can get dg cams made, as there's definitely a market for them

yes I saw that, they also say available in x days time If there is stock, so being listed is no guarantee as I understand it.

VWH told me they took all their stock but I woner too if there could be odd sizes, I emailed VWH but they never replied, I guess I will have to phone them again

I would contact VW classic parts directly and see what they say. Then you will know for sure.

All the cams say 5 -10 days delivery for outside Germany - It's got to be worth a go and at least they might respond.

just looked at their contact form, looks like it's really for trade, will try VWH by phone first and see if they will check for me, if no joy I will try direct.

Just had a -2 dg cam arrive today from Classic through VWH. I ordered it over 3 weeks ago, so allow plenty of time.
