Re: Knock, knock, who's there?
Interesting results from tonight's tinkering. I figured before running the engine I'd check the valve clearances, exhaust valves 1 and 4 were tight and more worrying exhaust valve 2 was so tight I couldn't get a feeler blade in. I'm thinking perhaps this was causing the engine to heat beyond the efficacy of the oil resulting in knocking? I've got 5ltrs of 20/50 valvoline on order from eurocarparts so hopefully get the oil changed tomorrow.

Do you have hydraulic valves?tamson wrote:Interesting results from tonight's tinkering. OK so when were the lifters changed from standard hydraulic?

Good question, before I owned the van. When I overhauled the engine I replaced like with like so stuck with the mechanical lifters.

I can hear the noise ( in your recording ) when the engine is cold! It just gets louder as the engine warms up.
Get someone to put their foot on the clutch to see if the noise changes.
Has the engine got something loose, exhaust? or a head stud nut loose ?

Hi Dave, no I don't think so. I've been round all the nuts (cyl head, heat exchangers, gear box bolts, manifolds etc) definitely need to change the oil as when I topped up the level I noticed it was a bit emulsified under the cap. I'm hoping that will make a bit of difference. As I said I adjusted the valves last night and tweaked the timing today - it was off a degree or two - and I think it's made a bit of difference to the sound. I'll post another video after oil change.

Re: Knock, knock, who's there?
I had quite a lot of trouble with a cu engined t2 ( in Australia ) on start up it would make a very nasty clatter and then calm down to a more normal air cooled sound,it was a loose valve guide and it broke up and jammed the valve open killing the engine!! In Tennents creek ( the middle of Australia !)
The camshaft was so worn that there was hardly any valve lift!
There got that off my chest!!

Bloody heck I bet that was an experience and a half, not exactly a roadside fix! Well my engine was only rebuilt 5500 miles ago, admittedly by myself and I'm just a hobbiest, but hopefull none of the parts should be that worn out yet.
