its a long time ago now, but symptoms fit yours, however we never got past bleeding it up really before we took it out and investigated, as it was on unknown ( supposedly good) replacement engine we were putting in ....
you cant see soo well in the pics, but a pin hole through from the water gallery into the combustion chamber ......

it was cylinder 2 iirc..... only a very small hole, and we didnt spot it at first !
