Hi guys, I could do with some engine help,please..we are parked just outside Oxford, on the way (hopefully) to Cornwall,. And it's running like a bag of poo,every time I slow down for roundabouts, etc. It cuts out and restarts (after a lot of turning over, on one, two and eventually all 4. recent new exhaust system blowing a bit which won't help, and engine has been rolling road tuned after swapping injection system for carbs, so is sposed to be fine, any helpful ideas or directions to an engine wiz gratefully accepted thanks xx it's a 1986 2.1 petrol vanagon left hooker if that helps too :) x
I'll be here for a while checking for replies, and here till morning anyway..... x

Sounds a little like a blocked fuel filter.

That may well be worth checking out man thnx, it's probably the only bit that hasn't had attention recently, nice one, dark now, morning is soon enough tho ;) x

Worth checking for water in the fuel if you've been driving in the rain recently, that gave me very similar problems after a very wet motorway run.

Hi man, less likely I would think to be water, not been thru much in the past few days, also fuelled up twice (that's 2.1 pet for you) :( how would I check tho? Fuel filter again? Thnxs for reply x

One thing to remember is folk fit a fuel filter in the engine bay.Probably because they don't know where the correct one is situated.The only filter that should be on the van is just after the fuel tank.

Morning all, I'm up and at it...... Crawling under van in a nice camping site Nr kindling ton gettin some odd looks, expecting 'your not going to leave any oil on the floor are you?' (Hope not! Smile)

Update of the day....... Checked around kidlington for à motorfactors, came across à small garage with à couple of old cars Being tinkelde with, told the Guy my story, he popped the dizzy and checked the pointes gap, (bearing in mind i'd been told it had been changed to electronic) the gap was totally closed up. TaDaa, all that bloody mither because I didnt need to check the 'gap' Thanks for all the suggestions as to possibles, all I need say is 'mind the gap!!' I live and learn, Cornwall he we come! Woohoo (in cheddar as we type) x happy trails x

Glad you’re back on the road :ok

But, are you saying you have an 86, 2.1 with an old beetle / Type 2 mechanical distributor, with points :shock: (or am I misunderstanding?)
Got a new van, but it's a 165bhp T4 [shock horror] Accurate LPG Station map here

Electronic ignition is standard on our vans.
I would suggest it gets returned back to the modern world.

Hi peeps finally got internet! Ok, so I have à weber carb kit Now instead of the injection system that iT used to have, iT was running really badly and iT was recommended to me to get à conversion, to run the carbs I also needed to change the dizzy to an 009 Bosch type with points and the fuel regulator, the coil looks New too so maybe that was changed as well, can't say for sure, hadn't looked that hard at it previously. when iT came back after the work and à tune, I was informed that he had also swapped iT to electronic ignition so I presumed this was the case. Found that nice helpful garage guy in kidlington and he popped the dizzy to reveal points! Ta daa. After opening them up again, he said try that........ Yep problem solved had I known they were still points I might well have checked them too :oops: so from then on it ran great, albeit still with its blowy exhaust, just sounds more 'dubbiish' to me :D have been round top part of Cornwall, down to the lizard and lands end now heading homeward via Sth wales, currently in the leyward arms 5 mile outside Exeter, oh the only other slight problem I had was after I bought some oil from halfords, 20/50 I dipped the stick in, it got stuck, pulled it out minus the end up to the low lol mark! Waaaaaaa, another really helpful guy in the service dept. Suggested several things and I thought it was going to be a sump off job :( then he said maybe you can get a telescopic magnet thing and put it down the oil stick hole (after removing the tube bit) so he lent me one and with much trepidation I stuck it down............ Bingo! First time! Woohoo. Now need a new dipstick and tube but I can cope till home. Happy days thanks for all your suggestions people, next time I won't believe all I'm told :? X
