I have inline fuses in the wire from the panel to the controller and in the line from the controller to each battery , I only have a 150w panel, so a 20amp fuse in the feed from panel and a 20amp in each battery feed, nearest to the battery ( although the controller is sited next to the leisure battery anyway so it's only a 6" run)

Diode also gives a voltage drop, 0.6-0.7 volts.

Sorry if I have confused the situation, I only mentioned diodes to make the point that without some form of protection the wire could have to carry the full capacity of the battery, i think a fuse is much more suitable for this purpose myself.
