Point to note: Car tax is included in the petrol price here. Also, away from big towns and cities your fuel will go further as the roads are not crowded and once in top gear you can cruse for miles.

If it wasn't for stopping off at tolls!!! £130 later [UNAMUSED FACE] just as cheep and easier to get the ferry down.

Yeah, know what you mean.
Just did Calais to Somport tunnel on our way south, Tom Tom was advised to keep us clear of tolls, put an extra 5 hours on the journey but we did get to see some nice parts of France we otherwise would have rushed past.
Due to fact speed was lower the actual difference in fuel was negligible. We had driven up using the tolls as we didn't know what to expect, haven't sorted out the actual costs but at first glance, although a longer (time and distance) journey, it does appear coming back was cheaper than going.
All of this was not in a van but the wife's regular hack, the Zafira 2.0 Dti.
