loud clicking/ticking when ignition switched on(fuel pump?)

Post by JMGR33N »

Hi All,

something I've been meaning to ask.

When I turn the ignition on, on my Panel Van, I'm getting a fairly loud clicking/ticking noise which sounds like is coming from under the van. Turn the Key all the way and it starts fine.

I am assuming that this is the fuel pump priming, but should it really be that loud?

It's an 82 Panel Van, 2.0l Cu Aircooled engine.

Thanks for any comments.

As an electric fuel pump is a retro fit, it depends on how well the pump was mounted and what type of pump it is.

Hi,
I had the same issue with our van (same engine, not that I think that makes a difference!)
which was getting louder. I figured out it was air getting in the fuel line, allowing fuel to return to tank overnight etc.
Ours was positioned under the back drivers side wheel arch, near to where the fuel line gos through the bulkhead and splits for the carburetors.
After changing all fuel lines (and seeing what I removed  )
and fitting a one way valve near bulkhead, its now silent.

Ah ok, that's good info thanks buddy. I'll have a good checkmover the whole system when I get under there.
If air can get in, fuel can get out and really don't fancy a fire lol.

I have the same noise - i'll probably end up replacing the pump soon with a facet of some sort and regulator.
