AAZ fuel pump pulley woes.....
I need a bit of luck right now and I am hoping someone here can help.... (I wont be the first time and certainly wont be the last!!)
I have have spent all my spare time and money over the last few weeks replacing my dead AAZ (not long after replacing my dead gearbox...)
What was meant to have been a straight swap ended up feeling like trying to fit Lego to Stckle Bricks.
The replacement engine is a low mileage early AAZ and my previous engine was a later AAZ.
Anyway today was the day; all I had left to do was fit the exhaust and bleed the coolant... All going fine until some very strange noises and the engine spluttered and died. Cut along story short it turns out that the fuel pump pulley was loose. Something I should have checked but had no idea it had been undone by the previous owner.
The pulley part number is 028 130 111C the woodroffe Key is damaged and so is the internal slot on the pulley.
My old engine has a very different set up and was high milage and not conviced the pump was great, I also have my old knackerd JX but the pulley code is 028 130 111B and is back to front.
I have searched online and can only find pullies with the code 028 130 111A..... Is the 'A' code pulley one I can use?
Or do I have to source a 'C' code...

You don't need the woodruff key, the pully is held in place by the taper just like the cam pully.
The woodruff key is only there to position the pully in the correct orientation so that the timing pin is close to the correct place, as long as the woodruff key is complete enough to hold the pully whilst you torque the nut to 45nm it will be fine, don't worry about any slight discrepancy as you will put it right when you set the plunger lift at tdc with a dti by turning the pump body on the mount.

Thanks MGP. That sound possibly doable.... I have realised over the last few weeks that I am just playing with spanners! I am so lucky though my Doka is currently sat in a real mechanics workshop who is constantly looking over my shoulder and sharing his wisdom... I will pass on your thoughts and I am sure he will do the right thing!
However I am more than a little worried that as it came loose it spun inside the tapered hole and has worn it enough to cause excessive play as when held in place it rocks...
We will see!

Can anyone answer my pulley compatibility question?
Regarding the part numbers as I can still only find the part ending in 'A' mine is vw 028 130 111C and one from a JX I had kicking around ends in 'B' and is back to front.....
I am still looking as My friendly mechanic/mentor pulled a face when I suggested refitting the damaged one!

As far as I'm aware the aaz pumps all have the same body.
You old aaz engine I assume has the 2 part adjustable pully and a fixed pump whereas your new engine runs a 1 part fixed pully with an adjustable pump mount, the adjustable pully should fit onto you new pump however I'm not sure if the offset is the same, if it's not you will need to swap over the pump mounts.

MGP thanks again.... I am not cinvinced my old pump was the best..... However to get myself back on the road I will have a look and see whats involved and report back!

Keep your new pump just use the mount and pully from the old one

The pulley wheel is completely different....

But the pump shaft should be the same, the only difference would be the offset which is why you may need to swap the pump mounts.

Thanks MGP for your patience .... this is what I meant You can see its not the tradition pulley with a hole in middle... I guess all will become clear when I am actually working on it!

is that definately an AAZ pump? Looks a bit like the Lucas pumps found on AEF engines

It came out of a golf along with the complete engine.... I will take a closer look tomorrow

i'm confused.
you've got an AAZ with a lucas pump on? got a pic of the engine from birds eye view?
Did you buy the new engine outright or buy the car and take it out ?
Reg number of the donor car if you did the latter
