Larger radiator fan motor

Post by oldandgrumpy »

Hi, I,ve just got back from Dubs at the castle where I bought a second hand rad with what I believe is a 450 watt fan motor. I,ve found an interesting article which says this possibly came off a van of a certain age with AC. Can anyone tell me if this will work instead of my 200/300 watt motor and if it will possibly improve the cooling?

hi
fans that operate with AC are usually two speed . if you activate the fan full belt it will sound like a turbo 747.
On AC vans the second stage as described above was used when the engine temp got a tad hotter than the norm and also because of the thermal heat shoved in to the radiator by the AC. The first stage (lower temp) motor had a resistor behind the headlight to slow the fan down a bit for normal traffic use.
So after all that, if you have a single speed installation it will sound like the 747 above !!

Hi, thanks for the reply. That,s pretty much what I read but it didn,t mention the noise !! Turns out I had some other issues going on. The water pump had pretty much stopped working, changed it for a new one but snapped the bolts going through the thermostat housing in the process, sent this to my local machine shop who shattered it drilling them out!! No probs the nice man said, you should get a new one for about £20. LOL, turns out these early metal housings are rarer than rocking horse poo. Scoured every autojumble in the country before finding a second hand one for £50. Also noticed the original metal front to back radiator pipes had been almost completely flattened due to some over ambitious off roading( Previous owner apparantley thought it was a Syncro) so changed these for plastic ones, then noticed the front to back heater pipes had been rubbing on the driveshaft and had almost worn through so changed these too. All in all it,s a miracle the thing was running at all !!
