Slave cylinder
Hi everyone,
So I have just picked up my 1989 German imported westfalia 1.6 TD, and after a nice 300 mile drive it developed a 'small' problem. The slave cylinder is leaking, and i can't change gear when the engine is running. so i had to get a piggy bag from the recovery guys.
I know there are some post here about replacing the slave. so i think the leaking is either from a seal or where the pipe is connected. i had a look to see what replacement pipe there are, but non look like the one that i have. The one fitted is coiled around several times before it is connected to the cylinder.
What does that mean, and should i try to change it? if so which pipe should i use?
It seems only to leak when i press the clutch.

should i get it and see if it needs changing or wait until i have taken out the slave?

Re: Slave cylinder
Evening,
I'd get under the van and give the rubber cover on the slave a prod. I did this to mine when my gear change got a bit ropey- fluid peed out everywhere. The connecting pipes were fine.

Re: Slave cylinder
I had the same curly pipe too, leaked just on the union by the slave cylinder ; I replaced the slave cylinder & the metal curly pipe with the items highlighted by Kev, bit of a bugger to remover the slave cylinder due to rusty bolts ; I replaced the bolts and brushed grease over the new bolts..

Re: Slave cylinder
I just had my salve cylinder replaced had to use a budget one as OEM not available when I needed it, (I am aware I may not last as well).
If I remember I got mine from JK in the end believe it is the same as brickwerks sell but was ordering some other stuff so worked out cheaper with postage.

Re: Slave cylinder
Buggers to change - you'll curse those slave cylinder nuts & bolts. Why VW designed the bracket that way escapes me. Still, once its done its done. Get some plusgas on the nuts before weekend though.

Re: Slave cylinder
start spraying the nuts and bolts just now with penetrating oil . it might help with getting them of. i changed the cylinder and the pipes to the master cylinder recently . ended up cutting the bolts of with a small grinder. dont let the dot 4 get too low in the vessel behind dash,
Re: Slave cylinder
It's working again, replaced the slave and the pipe, as it broke trying to unscrew the rusty thing. But it's fine now. Just have to take a look after driving a bit to see if it's leaking, and fasten the scrues again. Thanks everyone for your help
