So Im planning my interior, the van is currently completely empty so I can run cables easily. I have a westy interior to fit.
Starter is currently under the drivers seat (petrol van) and I an thinking of moving it but I'm just not sure where, under the RnR bed (with the lesiures?) or beside the engine, behind the rear light. Planning to use the locations under both seats for tools.
Planning on 2 x traction batteries as per Nesty's set-up, solar system and converting the westy fridge to a compressor as per DutchDude
So very interested in what others have done and how they find things
I wouldn't move starter - too handy where it is for access and jump starting. I've moved batteries all over mine but found starter batt is best where VW put it. You could move it to engine bay but fit some kind of socket near dipstick flap so you can at least get a jump start. Most get cheesed off with all the cables that end up attached to positive terminal but you can always put those in a connector box leaving only one cable going to positive:

My starter battery is in the engine bay , in the void infront of the rear lights, it's closer to the alternator and starter motor for a start and out of the way !
I do have a Anderson socket behind the number plate flap for the jump leads ( never once used for my own starting , only for others I may add)
and I have a junction box where the battery used to be under the drivers seat where very thing that was connected to the battery is now connected .
It's pretty simple job to move the battery , but you have rice burner in the back there and loads of extra stuff dotted about that goes with it , so maybe not so easy for you .

Hi CovKid
What is the junction box by your starter, sounds like a good ides, also like your idea of upgrading the cable to the fuse box

Hi Mocki
I hope your well.....Yep I saw you have moved your battery and the anderson is a good idea, also plan to pop the 240v on the flap, like the rice burner description, I had not heard of that before
Search for "marine battery junction box" on ebay. You'll see them. Its about the only one I found that was up to the job. If I remember rightly I searched further and got mine for under £8 each but at least it gives you a start. Nice fat bolts in there for quality ring connectors. You can get most automotive connectors VERY cheap in Toolstation - even fat battery lugs.
Upgrading dash cable makes a MASSIVE difference in terms of capacity and gives you brighter headlights. The other one I wrote on upgrading starter/alternator cables is worth a read too. VW were somewhat conservative when it came to the heavier cables used. People do fit brighter bulbs but its not the answer - thats merely compensating for the losses in the existing cables.
cheers, have read both and Im planning to use them
