Hydraulic Power Steering Query

Post by Smiffo »

Afternoon all.

After multiple power steering bits have been sitting redundant in my spare room for several months, it is time to get the power steering fitted on the van, and clear the space which is causing me grief at home...!!
I think I have everything now to proceed, but there appears to be an electrical `switch` or similar on one of the parts.
Almost like a pressure switch or something.

Question - assuming this adjusts power assistance with speed - how is this connected to the setup?
Is this supposed to be connected to a connector I don't have yet, or to the speedo or existing part of the loom, or something else entirely?

Apologies if this should be in the `electrical` section. As it is a Power Steering install thread, I thought I would pop it in `mechanical` first.

Thanks in advance.

it's a load sensor, basically if you turn the steering more than a few degrees at idle it tells the idle control system to give it some revs to stop the load stalling the engine, at low revs beyond idle it tells the ecu to do the same; fuel injection vans have idle control system as stock and 1.9 petrols with p/s had the 2e4 carb which has an idle/low revs control solenoid, not sure how it interacts with a diesel engine fuel pump, pretty rare p/s on diesels and I've never worked on one

Ah, makes sense.
So because I only have a 2e3 carb, am I right in thinking that I will have to pre-Empt the need for more revs when parking, and just give it a bit of revs to stop it stalling ?

Anyone know whether this is going to cause me an issue?
I am slightly concerned that the power steering won't be compatible with my Pierburg 2e3 setup.

Anyone else have a 1.9 DG with power steering but without the 2e4?

I have a 2.1 WBX on twin carbs and have no issues whatsoever with the standard fitted power steering. There is no noticeable drop In revs when going from lock to lock on idle.

It would only a problem if you go onto full lock and hold it there with the engine idling. If it is a problem just run at a slightly higher idle speed.

Cheers both.
So when installing, I just leave that connector on the rack redundant then?

Feeling better already - I almost had the feeling I was going down the route I went with my solex to pierburg swap out..!! :run
I.e. One thing leading to another aspect to be altered.!!

The pressure switch screws into the high pressure outlet pipe on the pump, not the rack. Just leave it disconnected and prepare for a very occasional restart if it stalls on full lock.
