Coolant issues 2.1i

Post by photosolo »

Can anyone offer up advice.
I've been having general coolant air bleeding issues for a couple of weeks.
I understand it can take some time to fully remove the air. So I'm persevering. I've just returned from a long run last night. Weymouth - London.
Bled loads of air out the radiator when arrived in Weymouth.
Hardly any on arrival to London.
However, on checking the levels this morning (stone cold)
The expansion tank had overflowed when I opened the cap. (Never had that before)
Whilst the header tank was only just covering the top hose.
Doesn't seem right, has anyone experienced this ?
Any ideas what could be going on?
It's a new reconditioned engine fitted about 3 months ago

I'm assuming that when you got to Weymouth that you opened the bleed screw waited for coolant to come out did it up and left it without touching the coolant levels and did the same when you got back to London, if this is the case then I would say that it's the hose between the 2 tanks that is perished allowing air to be drawn into the main tank as opposed to coolant from the top up tank

Yeah bled from radiator bleed screw when arrived in Weymouth.
Loads of air escaped. Next day I topped up the header by reving engine at same time. Which added only quarter litre ish. Drove to London
Bled a touch at petrol station on route. Then checked when arrived home, didn't appear to have any air in rad.
Then this morning whilst unpacking I went to check coolant expansion and it must have overflowed half a litre ish at a guess. The header tank was strangely half empty.
I heard this could be symptom of head gasket going.
But as engine is nearly brand new I'm hopeful it's something else?
Going to return it to the garage that fitted the engine later today. Hopefully they can get to the bottom of it!

Update!
Took it back to the garage that fitted the new engine..
Have been advised that it's a head gasket gone.
Bad news it's not covered by warranty as the cause would have been overheating due to a corroded coolant pipe connection.
At least I haven't booked a ferry to Spain in 8 days with camper!!!!

I would be asking a few questions as to why the engine was fitted with a corroded coolant pipe in the first place.
For the pipe to go inside 3 months it should of been clear that it was corroded.

I know. Trouble is it was the radiator end that was the culprit connecting piece above the spare wheel.
This 2.1i is jinxed. On the positive side at least this has been identified before my trip to Spain !

It shouldn't matter where the problem was, any decent mechanic knows that as soon as that temperature sensitive sticker that is fitted when engines are rebuilt, changes colour that the builders liability stops.
Fitting any new engine to any age vehicle should involve a full inspection of all ancillary parts especially the coolant system.

Ive attached a screen grab off their website.
Im not qualified enough to know where I stand on this thing.
Do the connections on the coolant hoses front to rear count as "ancillaries" ?

I would say that whoever fitted the engine are responsible for ensuring the integrity of the rest of the cooling system.
