Automatic: sourcing starter inhibit contacts block

Post by flora »

I have taken off the starter inhibitor switch (spring loaded brass wiper) and associated plastic contact block from the gear selector of my automatic. Brikwerks can supply a replacement switch, but say that they know of no supplier for the contact block (plastic with six brass contacts). Does anyone know a supplier of a replacement part?

I think I'd chew on that one and see if you can find a part from another model in VW range or even another make that can be adapted to work and is readily available. Anything that is hard to source I tend to look for alternatives as the price will tend to be lower and they're easier to get in the future.

Germany may be a potential source though. Talk to Frank Grote (Walton on Sea). I've known Frank for 25 years and he regularly goes in and out of Germany picking up parts. Unfortunately his site (Franks VW Bus Parts) is down at mo but I'm sure with a bit of digging you could find his number.

Many many thanks for the support, steadied my nerves knowing I could get a replacement contact block!! I have fitted the new spring-loaded wiper, and the old contact block seems to be working fine. I had no reversing lights before, and looking at the old wiper have found it to be very worn and hence not making good contact with the reversing circuit. If I have to eventually replace the contact block, I now know where to look. Cheers!

Buy while you can, you don't know if these are discontinued and just new old stock.
