Water pump. What else?

Post by Dad »

My water pump is grumbling so as I understand it's a non-serviceable part on the 1.9 dg wbx, I'll replace it. Is there any thing else I should do at the same Time? coolant was done 3 yrs ago.(pink stuff).

Flush coolant and replace, probably not - loads of it. Er, test the thermostat maybe, check the V belt. Oh, get some copper grease on the studs when replacing because one day etc...

Any short hoses that have to come off - change them for silicone. I bought half a meter length for about £8 on ebay. If they're coming off, you might as well fit new ones. Just a thought.

As for gaskets, I discovered recently that high temperature silicone sheet (as used in baking products like loaf tins) can easily be cut into gaskets and makes a perfect watertight and heatproof seal where metal water pipes bolt up to other parts of the engine. Have used it on carb mating surfaces too. Good stuff to have in a drawer.

I suppose that would work. Not sure it would stand up to a lot of heat though :) I had feared that the silicone would be squeezed out once bolts were tightened up but this proved not to be the case. It compresses nicely. Beats paper ones anyway.
