Air filt ducting on my engine

Post by Ads1987 »

Hi all,

My air filter currently draws in air from the warm engine bay and I think I'm missing some bits, I have a plastic air guide in the quarter panel by the vent but it stops 30cm down and then the air box just has a small bit of pipe.

Can someone please point me in the right direction to purchase the necessary items or maybe supply me with the parts numbers needed!

Thanks all,

Adam.

Here's what the rest of it should look like.

I have the crinkly pipe, the rigid elbow, and the bellows here, all going spare, but the bellows is split, and as far as I know not available, so I replaced it with generic components from Auto Silicone Hoses.

Your engine will be so much quieter (here I go again!) if you can make a decent job of the air ducting.

I'll take some pics of my new extra quiet setup tomorrow morning, and see if I can find the invoice for the parts.

Oh yeah that looks better, glad to hear it makes a difference to the noise as mines pretty bad at the mo!

Will be great if you can show the parts invoice and some pictures, really helpful thank you

Right............

Here's what I've got now.

And here's the Auto Silicone Hoses part nos.

Plus of course some worm drive clips.

I got the rigid PVC duct from a Telecoms contractor laying pipes years ago. I had to flatten it slightly and put a slight bend in it so it would go in the vertical side duct without vibrating against the bodywork. Sealed at the top with silicone sealer. Very important to have drain holes in the bend. It's not a noise attenuator like the OE pipe, so noisy outside the van but quiet inside.

Oh, and I also lined the vertical bodywork duct with some heavy rubber sheet to make it even quieter.

Ads 1987, you have PM.

I've got the small piece that connects the air box to the trunking multisi has posted up. I'll take a pic if you're interested - yours for the price of post if you need it.

It sounds like you have the most important/hardest to find part which is that bit that sits up at the top behind the vent - this faces rearwards and stops rainwater coming down the intake tract. If you get all the OE rigid plastic parts you can then use silicone pipes for the trunking.

I made mine with a mix of OE parts and ASH hoses:

I made my pipe that goes from the air intake bit to the elbow from a piece of rolled up vinyl/cushion flooring (rolled a couple of times around) and taped to the original bits because my OEM long hose was disintegrating. The induction noise changed and is a little more noticeable but not intrusive.
