4 speed to 5 speed shifter conversion

Post by Uglybassplayer »

Hello All

Our new van was originally a 4 speed but is now fitted with a 5 speed. The original 4 speed shift mechanism is still being use (with a few bodges I think).

If I want to make the change permanent, what bits do I need to change? I have the shifter "box" already. Also the whole mechanism is in need of an overhaul, would a refurb kit have the necessary parts if I bought a 5 speed kit?

Many thanks

You need the lot. 5-speed lever, shift box (with guide pyramids at the bottom) and front rod are different to 4-speed, rear one the same but only for the same fuel i.e. 2 versions: petrol 4 or 5 speed, diesel 4 or 5 speed
The "cup" at the gearbox end and the nearby mounting plate that bolts to the gearbox case are also petrol/diesel specific.

If I have a 5 speed petrol box on a Diesel engine in a diesel van... Do I need diesel front linkage, shift box and lever, petrol rear linkage?

You should say what your van was , there is a difference with the shift box under the cab floor if it was turbo diesel. The raised up floor needs a taller shift box.

Urgent help needed..

83 diesel van (so I assume originally non turbo CS) originally 4 speed, now has a 1Z Tdi with a petrol 5 speed gearbox (ASM, ASL, AST ?). The linkage, shifter box and lever are all the original 4 speed. Reverse is difficult to find, and my wife finds it almost impossible... she's just had to get passers by to push the van back into a parking space so i need to get the shifting sorted!

I know i need to change almost everything to a 5 speed part however i'm unsure if i need all diesel parts or a combination....

Do i need (all 5 speed) diesel lever, diesel shiftbox, diesel front linkage and petrol rear linkage? Or all diesel?

Help much appretiated!

You need 5 speed gear lever and shift box under cab floor, petrol and diesel are the same . Get a complete linkage for 5 speed petrol . And any other parts onto gearbox will be petrol spec. So basically you just need petrol 5 speed parts.
