Van misses/judders when under strain
Good afternoon
I have been down to London from derbyshire and back. My van didn't miss a beat. Then last weekend we went camping locally. When the van is going up hill or shifting into 3rd/4th, basically under strain. It feels like the engine is missing/juddering. Almost like lack of fuel! It's a sudden feeling, not like a clutch slip.
I have ordered new inline oil filter as my first guess.
Once I have tried that, and knowing my luck failed. Does anyone have any other ideas?
Thanks

Check the distributor cap, HT leads and rotor arm. If these are suspect or haven't been changed for a while, they are worth renewing.
Also check the vacuum hose connections on the advance unit

sounds like a misfire, usually lead break down caused and spark being lost to block via metal shroud

Re: Van misses/judders when under strain
Been having similar problems for a couple of years my self, bus is fine on A roads, but as soon as you get on a motorway... it has the same symptoms...
New plugs
New leads
New coil
New lines and filters
Cleaned fuel tank
New clutch (not related)
Rebuilding carbs at the mo...
Only thing left is the pump

Maximilion. My mate, 2.0l cj in a t2, had a similar problem to you. Turned out to be gunk in his fuel tank. Ok on a roads when petrol was sloshing around but on straight runs the gunk was setting by the outlet from the tank. Took along time to figure it out. Just dropped the tank gave it a good clean out with petrol. No problem since.
sorry just seen you have already cleaned the tank.

Re: Van misses/judders when under strain
Thought I would add my recent experience under this heading, since symptoms were identical.
( 1.9DG)
Always felt like fuel starvation to me, started great, and pulled well while choked.
Didn't always stutter under load, and would be less with full tank.
Occurred during a trip around Devon's twisty lanes.
So changed in this order
In line filter , fuel seemed to flow freely when disconnecting filter
Checked vacuum unit for 2nd Venturi- OK ( didn't suspect blocked secondary jet as it was so random)
Fuel pump ( thought that when OK with full tank, pump had less 'lift' to do, so failing diaphragm )
Pump push rod ( existing 1mm short)
And finally .......
The gunk from the fuel tank which fixed the issue.
In hindsight it always pointed to gunk....

Re: Van misses/judders when under strain
My pet diagnosis....(been wheeled out a few times) is as Kev mentioned, the tenancy for the metal covers on the spark plug caps (shrouds) to cause the HT (high tension) voltage, to arc to the cylinder head before reaching the spark plug. Very common and fixed with new leads or NGK plug caps as a replacement to the originals.

Thankyou all for the input!
Still not managed to get around to changing the filter yet! Life and work a bit crazy at the minute. Will update once I get a chance!
Thanks again!!

Fuel starvation is normally a more subtle 'holding back' and usually occurs under 'high fuel demand' or if the tank is in a certain position for dirk to block a fuel line.
Ignition system faults are more on/off ... so when you say 'sudden feeling' I am more inclined to think ignition that fuel.
