Broken windscreen today

Post by itchyfeet »

Any do's and don'ts gratefully received.

I know the body can be rusty above fusebox.

I'm thinking what companies are good/bad?
should I replace seal or keep the original? If replace where to buy?

thanks

Paul

I had autoglass and good quality rubber. They did it three times and it still leaks. The rubber seems a couple of mm smaller judging by the line left by the original rubber. Having said that one of the traders on here said they'd used the rubber dozens of times without a problem

Never had a windscreen done, do they come to your house or do you have to go to them?

Why don't you cut the seal, pop the screen and then put a tarp over it until you're ready to call in the screen fitter. My man in Wimborne knows of someone that he highly recommends when you come to fit.
Why would the glass be anything other than half full?

I had to go to them when my Frontera window got smashed and they didn't have the right one so I had to go without a rear wiper for a month until they ordered the correct one.

Fitting a new screen isn't too hard. I can do them on my own. You just need some nylon washing line. Agree, ditch the seal and fit a new one. Get mine from VWemporium but providing its not a JK or budget one, it'll go in easy. Its only a struggle with cheap crappy seals.

I decided that It was worth spending some money to ensure the best chance of a good seal on the screen so I splashed out on a genuine VW seal from Brickwerks.

National windscreens are the appointed company from the insurance ( Glynwoods policy) they were polite and helpful, they agreed to remove and come back if there was rust.

They came round this afternoon and removed the screen, needless to say there was rust but luckily only a tiny amount. I still asked them to come back so I can treat this, I won't get a chance to do it again for a while.

I'm also lucky in that my van is off road behind gates, a garage would be better but how people with only on road parking do this I don't know.

So it's under a gazebo, up at the front on camping chocks with a tarp over until they come back Tuesday.

The fitter told me they use a sealant if the rubber is reused, but they don't if it's a new seal.

Another thing I wondered, would it be a stupid idea to drill a couple of drain holes in the lowest part of the body, if water gets in it's sitting there possibly for months until it slowly dries out?
