Temp when my Fan kicks in seem OK?

Post by bmouthboyo »

With my van sat running on my drive on a hot day for about 20 minutes it sat around this mark and occasionally the fan cut in around here also:

I apologise for the sound, my radiator fan cowling needs replacing as the bubbled rust is fouling the fan blades.

Does this about right temperature wise for the fan to be cutting in and out?

It has a Mk1 1.8 Gti engine in it and just wondered if I need to have a look at the temp sender specifications if it is way out. I expected it to be about halfway?

Cheers :ok

Well, my 1.9 DG original engine fan cuts in before the guage gets that high, but there are a lot of factors like the guage isn't the same, the thermostsat is probably different, and the sensor will be different. So you really need to find out what temperature the fan is supposed to kick in for that engine, and whether that's the actual temperature that it does.
The guages on these vans are not known for being highly accurate, so that may not be a great indicator. Where does the needle sit when you are poodling along normally?

TBH I havnt driven it in 4 years as I work abroad at the moment. I was back for 3 weeks this month so did some work on her for my return next year.

It originally was a DG van but now has a Mk1 Gti engine in so not sure if the temp sender is the same range or if the engine should run warmer than a DG.

I have Audi clocks to fit eventually so will get a more accurate reading of oil temp etc so might go from there first. Was just curious if this fan cut in seems about right.

In this video it was so completly stationary for 20 minutes on a baking hot (for UK) day of about 30c.

The fan is ran from a different and independent `sensor/switch` than the gauge. i.e. even if the sensor that feeds the gauge is faulty, the one in the radiator for the fan will still cut in at a given temp.

If you have changed the engine, then I would assume the temp switch on the engine works on a different range, and as such would make your gauge inaccurate, even if the fan is kicking in at the right temp.

Did you have to solder in a resistor to the circuit or anything?
Also, your red light is continually flashing in the vid. This usually indicates low coolant level and is activated by relay 43/42 when the two prong sensor on the header tank sees low coolant levels.

The other possibility with a two-stage fan (even with a new rad switch) is that the first stage no longer functions and now its only the second stage working.

Does depend on model.
