Oil temp gauge and sender for 2L CU engine

Post by burnzdog »

Hi All,

I'd like to install an oil temp gauge but im struggling to find one for a 2L CU engine.

Does anyone know if I can achieve this without buying the old Porsche plate?
Thanks

Hello,

When you stop after a run.. pull out the dipstick..clean.. touch with finger.. hot but not hurty is good..

then check oil level..

It has worked on Aircooled VW's since.....ooh waay back... :)

Hope this helps..

Cordialement,

:ok

Hi Sarran1955

In was aware of thisnteat so after a lengthy run on the m27 i did exactly that. I couldn't hold it for very long. Engine seemed warm. Something's not quite right inkist don't no what. Hence I wanted to gauge the temp just in case.

Hello,

Sounds about right.. hot but not hurty.. :)

OK.. 2 things:

1) Get your engine really clean , and the tinware airtight.

really clean means going as far as cleaning( with a compressor and so on) the cylinder fins

make sure all the tinware is there, and that it is all screwed up tight., any mysterious holes blanked over with (matching please) gaffer tape.

I bet the thermostat bellows is either missing or bust.so you might as well jam the 'wongly flaps' in the open position...

2) Check your mixture with a gas analyser , ( I will put up some pics of mine later). This will tell you if you are running lean (too much air) or rich (too much fuel) ..

Running lean raises the cylinder head temp.

To answer your original question in another way.. you would do better having a cylinder head drilled and tapped for a temp sensor (like they do on aero engines), not dear and gives a better picture of operating conditions.

Use good quality mineral oil.

Teatime.. 8)

Thanks Sarran1955

I will try and fill in all the holes, but its already pretty well installed in terms of tinware.

I have also cleaned off the engine the best I can.

I purchased the carbs from Rurocarb and they were jetted for the engine they are installed on. I haven't got a gas analyser so not sure how I can achieve this?

Hi......I fitted a temp gauge and sender on a 2ltr cu engine......kit is available from vw heritage but you must ensure they know it is t25 as the sender is 50/60mm longer than 2ltr bay.........it took 2 goes but they sent the right one in the end.....easy to fit and gives you peace of mind
