1987 T25 - shuddering in 1st and revving at high speed

Post by Liz_limpet »

Hi all,

I'd like to request some advice if possible?

We have been driving our 1987 t25 around Europe for the past 2.5 months. It has recently been suffering from water loss. The other day it started revving whilst we were on the motorway and was sort of "running away" with me - a little frightening. Sort of felt like the accelerator was being pressed further without me doing it.

Later in the journey it started revving as we pulled away and up the gears just before each gear change. We took it to a garage and they apparently fixed a water leak by replacing a jubilee clip.

Today we drove for about 50 km without issue. We stopped to pay a toll and then as we pulled away the revving begun again. Then I noticed it was juddering in 1st when we got to, and drove around, the town centre.

Thinking back on the motorway journey from today I wonder whether it did feel like it had less power than usual...

Does anyone have any ideas about what this problem is?

Advice would be greatly appreciated please as we are sat in Bologna wondering what to do!!!!

Missing some important details e.g what engine
Running away can be burning oil with diesels. Is there smoke?

Can also be the mat catching the accelerator

Thanks for the quick replies.

I had noticed that the pedal had become a bit sticky - i.e. difficult to compress sometimes until it then goes.

However, the revving occurs and I stopped pressing he accelerator and it continued so think it's something to do with the engine or cable.

It is a 1.9 tdi vw engine. Not the original. I thought maybe from a golf or something.

I wondered whether the two problems I mentioned were linked. I don't know much about vehicles but wondered whether it was to do with the transfer of power to the drive I.e. something is not connecting properly so that there is not enough power at the start, hence the juddering, but also maybe it's slipping at higher speeds so that it's almost like your pressing the accelerator and it's in neutral. Could it be something to do with the clutch? Some kind of plate not connecting properly so that the above occurs?

But I don't think the difficulty in pressing the accelerator is linked to this. It's been this was for some months...

That does sound like it's on the brink of runaway on its own oil, usually via the turbo bearing letting oil pressure squirt sideways into the air intake rather than returning to the sump. Could be blocked oil return pipe and/or blocked breather causing higher crankcase pressure.

Thanks for the reply. We will have to take it to a garage I think. Is it a problem that requires immediate attention in your opinion? Or could we drive on it?

Is that then just a case of having the pipes looked at and unblocked (and any seals replaced)?

Will it have likely caused any residual damage to the engine?

The engine is warning you that something catastrophic is going to happen
ASAP is the word here.

Defo what kev says. Drive as little as possible, if at all. Urgent diagnosis needed!
