rear lights

Anyone know what the lower rear outside light is for ..''red'' ..Mine is staying on and I cannot locate what these are actually for?

VW have separate brake and side lights
Is this what you mean?

The rear light cluster bottom outside red lights are staying on.I am trying to find out what this light is for .This has only happened from yesterday ..Its a full light unit no separates .both near side and off side are on..1985 van
The light unit is amber,white ,red on tip
And bottom is three red lights running parallel

didn't understand this

Ok from what I have found out this is the brake light ..any ideas why the brake lights would be staying on?
.Just read on another thread it could be the brake light switch running into the master cylinder?
Will have a proper look tomorrow..is the master cylinder in the engine bay?

No it is above the pedals accessed by removing the instrument binnacle, there can be one or two switches.
