Just solder the new one, no need for crimping tools.

May as well just solder the old one on then, you can unpeel the crimp and remove the old wire.

As for removing the crimp, they are not moulded in because they need to float, the pin is moulded into the fusebox.
the crimp usually has tangs that lock into the moulding, finding them and releasing them is the challenge which is why a special tool is usually made, you can usually do it with something else if you can see where they are.

These terminals are quite specific and used by VW and Porsche in the late 70's and early 80's, and not particularly easy to source. Wurth and Farnell both carry the terminals. The 'VW way' for repairs like this is to splice on a 'repair wire' with the correct terminal already crimped on, using a butt splice. The part number for this one (with 4mm wire) is 000 979 305 and should be available from your local VW dealer. Thanks for the info! Here is a pic of the connector in question - it is snapped but I have put the two pieces together in the pic. I have often thought of putting a relay in the line but wasn't sure if it was asking for more trouble - think I will now! Once I have the cable connected back to the fuse box I will cut it back at the starter end and see if I get current before I replace the while thing.

You definitely need a fresh terminal on there. Many folk criticise the T3 electrics but I think mostly unjustifiably, I find the original system works well and reliably still, on my two 1990 vans. The ignition switches and starter circuits have never given me trouble, though I am running later CE2 switches now, as I'm using T4 stalks.

Good work, AMP Mate-n-Lok sounds right, the second link I think, as its 10awg, so OK for the starter wire size. I'm out of stock too..

Check the socket size first in the specs, presumably yours is for a small pin.
