Fuel Tank problem solved

I thought I would share a problem and solution I have been having in case it helps anybody else.

Since I have owned my current van I have had a couple of fuel related problems.

1. On empty, I can only ever seem to get 40l in to get it to full. Once full there was initially a leak some from the top of the tank. (Yes the breather hoses were ok and in place)
2. I have had to replace the fuel filter about 3 times in two years due to crud getting in.

I assumed the tank was most likely like Swiss cheese at the top and so this weekend I finally bit the bullet and replaced the tank.

Once off, I was surprised to find that the tank seemed to be in reasonably good nick. No obvious holes or serious rust. However the Fuel Tank Breather Pipe had been been bodged into place at some point with a kind of putty. This putty had got into the pipe and blocked it.

Once the job was done I filled up the new tank and got 64l in.

So I am guessing the problem before was some sort of air pressure/vacuum issue?

Anyway, job done. In hindsight I should of dropped the tank first and inspected things before buying a new one.
