Starter motor issue

Hi,

Please can someone advise. My starter motor packed up the other day. I've manage to remove it and the short heavy cable from the solenoid to the motor has burnt off and corroded.

Is there any way of replacing this.

The part on the solenoid was bolted on and I have removed this, but the connection on the motor is welded to a spade sticking out of the motor. Can this piece be removed and replaced or do I have to weld on new cabling. Will soldering do the trick or is the current too heavy for that.

Any advise is welcome.

Copper braided wire plus 30 years of exposure to heat, oxygen & moisture equals copper oxide...Dust! I know of several others that have gone the same way.
As you say, the eyelet side is held with a 8mm nut, the other side is crimped and soldered but this is heavy duty stuff, requiring a lot of heat and a fair degree of no how. It might be advisable getting your local auto electrical over hauler to do this, they can fit some new brushes in there at the same time.

Maplins sell a 100 watt soldering iron for £15. Its just heavy enough to resolder braid inside. You'll need to remove end cap. Heres a video I did a while back:

Better by far to get local auto electrician to overhaul it for you, but if pennies count, you can do it yourself. Certainly check state of brushes. You can get them for about £7 online.
