dead as a dodo. starter or what.

Post by onc onc »

Hi guys, I'm having problems with van not starting. When I turn the key nothing, all the lights on dash come on, the battery is only 8 month old so I don't think it is that. Terminal on battery are clean. I can bump start it but it won't jump start with leads. Started to think possible starter motor. Keep seeing something about a bush that has to be replaced. Where is said bush and do all of our vans have this or is it specific to certain models. Mine is a 1.9dg water cooled petrol 1987. Tia

The bush you refer to is in the bell housing , the starter shaft located in it. It's a starter out job to replace , but you need to check that you are getting power to the starter in the first place. Are you getting any clicks from the solenoid when you turn the ignition to start ?
Put your battery on charge and make sure it is fully charged

The first thing is to check the red/black cable has not become detached or has a poor connection on to the starter motor.

Pretty straightforward. But check all the above advice first 'cause the only real reason to get the starter motor out would be to replace it &/or the bush.
Are we going on anything else?

Has the van been left for days without being started at al? As big herb says check the cable as indicated (won't hurt giving the connections a clean up). Give the starter motor itself a tap as well & then try to start with the clutch pressed down.
