RUST!

Post by Fozziebear »

Hi there,
I've been to look at a few Westfalia's and 1 of them had a rust scab on the bottom of the front windscreen on the drivers side, what would this be like to repair and is it a big job?
It also had a bit of surface rust on one of the rear arches again what sort or job would it be to sort this?
Any advice or info would be much appreciated.
Thanks

I suppose it depends on if its previously been covered up before or if its just showing whats actually needed, on 25+ year old vans it can be hard to tell, its a windscreen out job usually if you want to repair it correctly, I think the whole panel beneath the windscreen is either 60 quid for rhd or 90 quid if its lhd, is it on the lower panel or is it closer to the A-pillars? either way you can get parts, just involves cutting and welding in either a new panel or just some fresh metal depending on your metalworking/mechanical skills

same goes for the arches, there are panels out there for it, i paid 40 odd quid for a tall side panel with the arches, or you could do what a lot of owners in the past have done and cover it with filler and repaint, not that i recommend that approach

If you can see a rust scab there, I'd bet money that there is a hole there when you remove the windscreen. Windscreen needs to come out to fix and maybe the dash as well if it goes back to the inner lip.

And it's not surface rust.
It's rust that has taken 25 years to come to the surface.

Don't let it put you off. Mine had similar scabby bit . 4 years ago. Stripped windscreen out and dash for other repairs, no hole , was only surface rust .
