Stripped sump plug hole
Hello, I Hope you can help. We’ve stripped the sump plug on our T25. It’s M14.
A garage local to us has suggested re-tapping at M15 and fitting an M15 plug and seal. If this doesn’t work they suggest going to M17.
Given your experience, is this the approach that you would use?

Re: Stripped sump plug hole
you'll need to rethread the hole bigger with a suitable thread cutting taper tap, and get an M16 x 1.5 renault sump plug, or helicoil insert it and re-use std. sump plug. [M14 X 1.5 MM Pitch, if i remember right.]
MAFCO Part No 551-7140 Renault sump plug with washer M16 x 1.5 x 12 cost £3.95.

Re: Stripped sump plug hole
is it a WBX?
if so
M14x1.5 helicoil is the usual solution.
1D helicoil is a bit too long but works, if they can shorten it even better.
Drill and tap M16x1.5 is another solution but then you need a new sump plug, Brickwerks sell them for the WBX
Becareful with other solutions because sump plug is recessed and so many sump plugs won't fit.

Thanks for your replies. It's a 1.9 petrol DG engine.
Do you think that rethreading at M15 will be an ineffective remedy?

Re: Stripped sump plug hole
Why would you wan't to use a non standard size when M16 is a known good fix and sump plugs are readily available, tried and tested solution.
IMO M14 helicoil is better because if you strip out the M16 in future you have no metal left to go up a size.

Just as an aside, this is something I'm always a bit paranoid about. Is it best to try to loosen the plug when hot (ie after warming the engine oil) or cold?

Thanks again, it seems a M14x1.5 helicoil is a good solution. Do you know anywhere around Herts/Beds/Cambs that can fit one of these? Or are they really simple to fit into the existing stripped threads?
Cheers, RD

You could give RS Cars a call http://www.richard-shrive-cars.co.uk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; They have done quite of lot work on my van and understand classic cars.
Alternatively try the Dub Doctor - Neil Staines tel 07943 046650 http://www.facebook.com/thedubdoctor" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Both near Dunstable. Neil will come out to you.
Where do you live?

No, not far from there.
I have had a place in Henlow, C and F Motors, recommended to me, that's quite near, so will try there.

I always drain hot because it comes out faster and you get more dirty old oul out.
What kills sump plug threads in aluminium is people not using a torque wrench, I bet most people don't bother.
25 Nm isn't much, easy to put far more on with a good nip up unless you are very experienced.

Stripped sump plug hole
Can anyone recommend a M14x1.5 TAP to buy please, i.e. recommend a manufacturer or provide a Uniform Resource Locator (URL). Only just found out what this means !!
(I remove my sump plug with dread on most occasions as it's tight on the first few turns then it's loose then tightens up again to finish. I can't get my head around how that would happen but would like to try and to re-tap it at M14).

Re: Stripped sump plug hole
wheel bolt is M14x1.5, try winding one in and out a few times may just tell you if the thread is about to fall out (which is usually why they get tight) or iff your plug thread is a bit deformed.
I have a helicoil kit you can borrow if it goes that way.
