Timing issues.

Post by blakeys80 »

Hello and as this is my first post, pleased to meet you all.
We bought a 1980 2ltr (Type 4 engine), twin Solex carb, T25 Teca converted lhd camper, which was imported from Germany and is pretty well looked after, bar rust in usual places.
It has had a recon engine and GB fitted 2 years ago but was well overdue a service as it has stood for best part of 12 months.
Having changed plugs, rotor arm + distributer cap, oil + filter and fan belt, havent changed leads as they look resonanbly new.
Everything was running ok but I felt the engine wasnt performing brilliantly when driving, I felt it had a flat spot when accelerating so thought I'd try a new coil.
Having looked at mine (the black original I guess?) I researched a bit and asked @ my local GSF and chose a Bosch 'blue' as a replacement.
Having fitted and got the wife to fire up the engine, I heard a pop which I thought came from the left hand Carb choke connection? Now when I try do drive the timing seem s way off, almost like it's firing on 2 cylinders or only receiving fuel through 1 carb.
I have tried taking off the air filters and putting my palm on top both Carbs, they're getting fuel so I'm a little stuck.

I've now put the old black coil back on and it still isn't driving any better, any ideas/thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
I forgot to say I've driven in between changing leads and distributer cap + rotor arm and changing coil, all seemed ok apart from me thinking it was a bit flat.

Thanks

Cheers bigherb, Im looking forward to taking a look when I get home from working away, hfully its something simple, as it was driving and working ok until I swapped coils. Would that be part of the vacuum for the brake servo?

All fixed now, turned out to be one carb choke fully closed, the other on partially open, now both disconnected and running great again. Had its first MOT in my ownership this wk, just one small patch welded and passed, boooom! :D then found out from the dilligent mechanic that No3 cylinder is loosing pressure, Doh! Oh well, I'll drive it around and see what occurs.
Thanks for the help folks.
