And you sometimes need to repeat the exercise a few days later (or after a short run) - just to be sure. Its a lot easier with two people though.

Hello and huge thanks to everyone who took the time to respond. As you all correctly guessed it was poor technique on my part. Once I got the hang of upping the revs whilst adding coolant then top on etc it all went swimmingly. Lovely jet of blue coolant (only kidding) pink coolant shot out of bleed hole on radiator.

I'll be out for a 35ish mile run today so will check again when I get back.
