I think I cooked me fan

Post by gally »

Hi all
In a spot of bother. I was checking my fan was working.
I shorted centre pin and outer pin, fan came on no scraping sounded smooth. I then shorted center and other outer pin, nothing. Thinking I might have got it wrong I tried the two outer pins no fan. Now no mater what combination no fan at all.
Checked fuse,not blown.
Have 12v on first terminal of plug on left with red white wire.
Hope I haven't cooked my fan.
Any advice appreciated

You won't have cooked the fan. Not possible by doing what you did. It should have blown the fuse, though it might have damaged either the switch or a connection / junction, especially if the fuse was the wrong value. You will just need to get your meter out and find where the 12 volts suddenly dissappears, or where the continuity of the earth circuit dissappears. Suggest work from the fuse first, going towards the fan, via the switch, somewhere along the route to the actual fan you should find where the fault is. If 12 volts is getting to the fan, then next trace the earthy side of the wiring.

I think I just pretty much said the same thing twice there!!

Thanks for the reply.
The fault must be between plug and the fan.
Or maybe earth problem.
I have 12v at plug.
Strange that it came on once.
The usual fitted new fan belt ,new temp gauge sender as gauge not working. 2 fixes equals 1 breakage.
Won't get near it today pissing rain outside.
Thanks again.

Underneath the relay on the left hand side side panel above the fuse box and earth crowns. But if you have changed the relay you would have seen it.

Thanks lads sorted!
Had not seen relay above fuse box.
So I didn't go near that.
I know where it is now for next time.
Just unplugged plug on back of fuseboard
For relay 24 and remade it.
Checked all connections.
Hey presto fan on both speeds :ok
