Crankshaft endplay
Well I am finally getting round to fitting the 2.1 engine I built and having removed the 1.9 I have retrieved the flex plate so that I can set the end play. I have a few shims from different engines but do not seem to have the right sizes to get the 0.08-0.1 that I am aiming at!!! The closest I can get is 0.065mm using a dial gauge. Now the spec says between 0.07 and 0.13. I am 0.005 under so the question is. Is that enough to matter? At present I am erring towards that being ok and not likely to seize my engine or hammer my thrust faces. If anyone knows better please let me know. The next best I can do with the shims I have is 0.18 which is just far too much. At present I have a 0.4 and two 0.3 shims in. I could get a 0.24 which would get me to 0.071 but is it worth it for 0.005?

Re: Crankshaft endplay
Have you given the crank a hard push in both directions?
these is often a bit more play than is obvious

Yes this is the measurement with the crank being pushed hard both ways. I think I'm going to run with it as it is and hope there is a couple of spare hundredths of a millimetre for luck in the lower limit!!!

Is this an early WBX?
if so I seem to remember you don't need the large dia 0.4mm shim , you can use all smaller diameter.
if so I can check what I have but probably have a 0.36 or 0.34 happy to post it or swap ?

0.005mm / 2 tenths of a thou in old money, not much.
Not knowing what the shims look like, possibly if you wanted, you could stick one onto something flat and lapp a few tenths off using fine wet & dry on a flat surface such as glass. Probably wouldn't take much time.

Dont just push the crank, lever it with a pry bar. Remember that you are simulating the effect of pushing the clutch out. Its a considerable load.
Most engunes have a crank end float of 4 to 6 thou' or about 0.1 to 0.15mmr

Re: Crankshaft endplay
It still matters though. The gap limits the rate of oil loss from the rear main bearing...

Re: Crankshaft endplay
THanks for all your advice folks, It is an old case with single piece thrust on sides of bearing. In the end I got the 0.4 shim and rubbed it gently on some wet and dry for some time on a flat bench. I got it down to what seemed to be around 0.38 give or take and refitted the shims. I was expecting to have 0.085 now but it measures 0.075 when levered both ways with a jack handle so I have torqued it up and fitted the crank seal. I did 60nm and then 45 degrees. The manual says 90 degrees but wow these bolts take a bit of stretching, after alot of huffing and puffing trying to tighten and hold the crank still at the same time the other 45 degrees was achieved!!! Now I'm just waiting for a mate with a hoist to drop it in.

What manual and what pulley?
Bentley and Haynes both say 60Nm for single and 350Nm for tripple pulley, no mention of 90 deg addition?
